You may wonder why I'm asking that question. After all, it's pretty obvious that when everyone within an organization trusts each other, the organization works better.
And, if other companies trust your organization, you will do better business with them.
Our world is changing more rapidly than ever before.
New technology solutions, particularly AI, are arriving daily and promise to radically transform how we do our work, potentially threatening our jobs.
Society is changing rapidly with rapidly evolving approaches to communication through social media platforms and political upheaval, spreading misinformation and fear, and eroding trust in our communities.
People need places where they can feel trusted. Since we spend a significant portion of our waking hours at work, finding a trusting work environment can make a real difference for individuals, build loyalty, and improve organizational performance.
My question is: if the concept that trust between people and organizations makes things work better is obvious, why is there such a gap of trust within and between organizations?
Let's start with trust within organizations. If you're a leader, at any level in our company, do you know if your people trust you? How would you know?
There are objective measures of trust, most commonly found in employee surveys of engagement or satisfaction. What does your survey tell you?
Is there a question that directly speaks to trust?
If so, what is your rating?
Are there deeper dive questions that help you understand why you have the rating you do?
Start with this. Right now.
Go find the most recent survey that's been done in your organization, preferably for your work unit, and get the rating. Look for those deeper dive questions that explain the rating.
Then come back to my next blog post, where we'll talk about next steps now that you know how you rate.
