Trust Accelerates Team Dynamics

In my last post, I talked about How CEOs can build trust.

These include:

  • Making a clear statement about the importance of trust,

  • Communicating it widely,

  • Listening to your people,

  • Taking notes on what they say, and

  • Taking action on what you learn.

These steps build trust, which then accelerates team dynamics and creates opportunities for your team to excel.

Teams do their best when they can act quickly. Trust is the accelerant to quick action.

Think about what happens if your teams lack trust, in other words, are operating in a mindset of distrust.

People who don't trust each other spend more time protecting themselves than supporting each other. This results in the:

  • Double-checking assignments and results that inform the next steps,

  • Forming cliques of "allies" who reinforce each others' views and distrust those who are not in the in-group,

  • Competition for the approval of the boss - you if this is your direct team, and

  • Getting a lot less done, often done poorly, because of so much wasted time and duplicative work.

In our fast-paced world, when we need to:

  • work together,

  • feel free to challenge each other to make the best decisions possible, and

  • be willing to take risks knowing our teammates will cut us some slack because we assume positive intent with each other,

we can't afford to not build trust in our teams.

Here's my challenge to you - what are you doing to build trust in your team?

In addition to the ways I outlined in my last post, we'll get into more granular approaches in the next post.

To learn more, schedule a call with me, I'd love to help you do this right.
